FAQ

What is the purpose of this wiki?

The purpose of this wiki is to serve as a database of information related to the EverSD. As the EverSD is inherently linked to the Evercade console, information about the latter will be present across the wiki as well, but is not its primary focus. Information available here will include articles containing tutorials and documentation, as well as lists regarding compatible homebrew games and accessories, among other subjects. While approved by the makers of the EverSD, EverSD Wiki remains community operated, with editorial decisions left to its community editors. If you have a question or believe there is erroneous information listed, you are encouraged to contact the EverSD manufacturer or the wiki admin.

What is the Evercade?

The Evercade is a handheld emulation device released by Blaze Entertainment in 2020. Unlike other emulation consoles, the Evercade was designed to play cartridge-based collections of licensed games, rather than whichever games the user already owned. With a total catalogue of 291 officially licensed games across 27 cartridges, the Evercade can currently officially emulate systems ranging from the Atari 2600 to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. While the Evercade does not have any official means of multi-controller multiplayer support unlike its successor, the Evercade VS home emulation console, many of the device's official cartridges had multiplayer support implemented in anticipation of such a device. While both the Evercade and its VS successor have audio and video output and share cartridge compatibility, the latter also has Wi-Fi connectivity for the purpose of automatically installing firmware updates.

What is the EverSD?

The EverSD is a unlicensed complementary product to the Evercade, being a cartridge that allows developers to test how their games perform on the console. For non-developers, it can also be used to bolster one's Evercade game collection with hundreds of legally downloadable homebrew games, as well as digital retro games legally purchasable from publishers such as Atari and Sega for personal use on the device of one's choosing. In addition to its ability to emulate a wider range of systems than are represented by the 27 official Evercade cartridges, the device is also compatible with an adapter that allows for up to four-player multiplayer in applicable games.

How are games put onto the EverSD?

As its name suggests, the EverSD stores all of a user's emulators and games on a MicroSD card. While only MicroSD cards up to 256 gigabytes in capability are confirmed to function by the manufacturer, as the EverSD supports the MicroSDXC standard, MicroSD cards with capacities up to two terabytes should also be compatible. After a sufficiently high capacity MicroSD card is acquired and emulators are installed, all games should be placed in the game folder located at the root file location of the MicroSD card.

Does the EverSD come with games?

As the unlicensed distribution of commercial games would be illegal piracy, no games are included with the EverSD. As the device is intended solely for the emulation of developer, homebrew, and legally purchased emulatable games on the Evercade, neither the EverSD manufacturer nor the editors of this wiki condone the illegal acquisition and usage of pirated games. For legal methods of game acquisition, consult this wiki's lists of homebrew and legally purchasable commercial games.

Which systems can the EverSD emulate?

Via the use of RetroArch cores, the EverSD has the ability to make the Evercade emulate a wide variety of systems. As the EverSD is not shipped with emulators, the user should choose between the default frontend and RetroArch to finish setting up their EverSD. The default launcher has twelve emulator slots configured with cores that can emulate the following systems:

Atari 2600
Atari 7800
Atari Lynx
Game Boy
Game Boy Color
Game Boy Advance
Game Gear
NES / Famicom
Nintendo 64 (low speed)
PlayStation
Sega Genesis / Mega Drive
Sega Master System
TurboGrafx-16 / PC Engine
Neo Geo Pocket
WonderSwan
WonderSwan Color

Users wishing to emulate an additional system via this launcher must swap out one of the twelve default cores with another one. To install these default emulators for the default launcher, users with a 1.2 firmware version Evercade should download and extract the folders from this ZIP archive and place them at the root of their EverSD MicroSD card. Users with a 1.3 or higher firmware version Evercade should follow the same process with this ZIP archive after patching their Evercade with EverPatcher.

Users who would prefer to use the RetroArch frontend should follow the same process as above, using this ZIP archive of RetroArch files instead. If one's Evercade has a firmware version higher than 1.2, it must be patched with EverPatcher for RetroArch to function. As the RetroArch file set currently does not include emulator cores, users choosing to use the launcher should download their preferred cores and add them to the cores folder of RetroArch.

How can I patch my Evercade?

If an Evercade has a firmware revision higher than 1.2 installed, it must be patched via EverPatcher for the EverSD to function with it. Before doing so, ensure that you have the latest Evercade firmware patching driver installed onto your computer by downloading the official firmware update tool and installing the driver via the EvercadeUpdaterLauncher.exe application. After this is done, begin the patching process by downloading and removing EverPatcher from its ZIP archive. After running the program, put your Evercade into Flash Mode by turning it off, connecting it to your computer via USB, and turning the device on with the menu button simultaneously held down until the attached device sound is heard. After clicking the PATCH! button on your computer and waiting for the patching process to finish, you may unplug your now patched Evercade.

How is game art put onto the EverSD?

As with one's games, game art goes into the _game_ folder of the EverSD. To be detected by the device, the game art file should be in PNG format and have its name begin with the name of its corresponding game and end with the following number/letter combination depending on its type and whether it is meant to be displayed in Handheld or TV mode (with the prior game name in this case being for a theoretical game called Example):

Box Art Screenshot Game Info
Handheld Example0.png Example1.png Example2.png
TV Example0_hd.png Example1_hd.png Example2_hd.png

Therefore, the handheld box art image names for the theoretical games Example.nes and Example 2 (Prototype).sfc would be Example0.png and Example 2 (Prototype)0.png, respectively. Windows users may instead use the EverLoader application to convert their game art into automatically renamed and resized Handheld and TV images and to generate game information images.
